Michael Tureniec Wins EPT Copenhagen on Day 5
Day 5 of the EPT Copenhagen event saw the final table get whittled down until there was an eventual winner. That honor went to Michael Tureniec, collecting nearly €500,000 for first place prize money.
Aggressive play was a common feature at the final table, with the chip lead changing several times. Per Linde was the massive chip leader going into the final table, but that quickly changed.
During the early stages of the final table, John Eames was fortunate to pick up pocket kings three times in a short period of time. After 15 hands he picked up cowboys in the small blind and 3-bet. Nikolas Liakos got an inaccurate read and shoved all-in over what he thought was a re-steal attempt, but he could only show QJ and was the first player to get eliminated.
A few hands later, Eames picked up cowboys again, eliminating Juha Helppi in the process. It was a cooler hand for Helppi, unfortunately for him he picked up a pair of ladies at the same time.
Next, Eames was at it again with pocket kings, this time against Italian pro Andrea Dalle Molle who was short stacked and moved all-in before the flop.
Just when it seemed inevitable that Eames was going to go on with it, Tureniec picked up pocket fives against Khan's AJ which held up. Mudassar Khan, a Danish self confessed amateur player, was eliminated from the tournament.
Tureniec then managed to knock out Liakos, another one of the short stacks at the final table. He moved into second place after this elimination.
With a confidence boosting bigger stack, Tureniec showed no signs of slowing down to protect his chip lead over most of his opponents. After flopping trips on a Tc-Ts-7h board he managed to get all of his chips in the middle on the river, but his opponent, Iacofano, was a non believer and ended up calling with A7 just giving him a pair, which saw him eliminated in fourth place.
The remaining players when it became three-handed were Per Linde, John Eames and Michael Tureniec. At one point of three-handed play, all of the players had similar stacks, however, in the end Eames' pocket queens were up against Tureniec's AK, and a classic coin flip was going to decide the heads up play. The turn was a king and the river another king, leaving Eames incredibly short stacked. He ended up getting eliminated just a few hands later.
The heads up confrontation was decided between Tureniec and Linde, with Tureniec the significant chip leader. The rate of aggression didn't slow down, and Tureniec had Linde on the ropes in two different hands when Linde moved all-in for his remaining chips, however, Tureniec lost both times.
Eventually, it was to be Linde's pocket sevens which were called by Tureniec's AJ. A jack on the turn gave Tureniec the lead and his hand held up on the river, making Michael Tureniec the 2011 EPT Copenhagen champion.
